the French Association of Cytogeneticists

The French Association of Cytogeneticists, which name is "Association des Cytogénéticiens de Langue Française" (ACLF), was founded ten years ago. The objectives of the Association were to develop cytogenetic studies among the French speaking community, to organize meetings and conferences and to assure representation of the professionals in cytogenetics.

It now comprises about 300 members, all involved in cytogenetics. They are mainly from France, but some of them are from Canada, Belgium, Switzerland or other European countries. Practically all French cytogenetic laboratories are represented.

The Association organises an annual meeting which is attended each year by more than 250 persons. Beside main conferences, all participants are invited to present their most interesting results under the form of posters or oral presentations. This annual meeting is held in conjunction with that of the French Association of Technicians in Cytogenetics (ATC). ACLF has also organised workshops on karyotype/phenotype correlations concerning several chromosomes, with the aim to deal with each chromosome. Following these workshops, collaborative studies have been initiated. Discussions on current topics have also been conducted.

Working groups have been formed to elaborate national guidelines in the various fields of human cytogenetics, i.e. prenatal diagnosis, constitutional anomalies and onco-haematology, and to make propositions for external quality control.

A bulletin is regularly distributed, and a web site ( will be available soon to facilitate contacts between members and information.

The present committee is composed of: C Turleau (Paris) president, JL Taillemite (Paris), S Briault (Tours), J Van den Akker (Paris), AM Capodano (Marseille), vice-presidents, F Picard (Rennes), general secretary, and F Thepot (Amiens), treasurer.
