Dr. Juan Luis García Hernández holds a PhD in Biology from the University of Salamanca (1999). He joined the Cancer Research Center in 2002 and, since 2008, has served as a permanent I3SNS researcher for the Castile and León Institute for Health Sciences Studies Foundation (IECSCYL-IBSAL). He is currently assigned to the CANC-04 Molecular Genetics in Oncohematology group at IBSAL. His line of research focuses on the clinical application of molecular cytogenetic techniques and genomic characterization through genomic and expression array studies in oncohematological processes. He belongs to the Spanish Early-onset Colorectal Cancer Consortium (SECOC), where he has developed a series of studies to determine the genetic characteristics of this type of tumor. Currently, in collaboration with the Oncology Service of the University Clinical Hospital of Salamanca, his work now incorporates new massive sequencing techniques for biomarker detection in liquid biopsy studies. This line of research specifically uses mass sequencing, including Whole Exome Sequencing (WES), to determine biomarkers and genetic markers of resistance to treatment. He is a Member of the Spanish Association of Human Genetics and the European Society of Human Genetics and was Accredited in Human Genetics by the AEGH in March 2017. He is also a Member of the “Consolidated Research Units” (UIC) 143 Groups of CIC-IBMCC, the Spanish Early-onset Colorectal Cancer Consortium (SECOC), the Spanish Oncological Cytogenetics Group since 1995, and the Official Association of Biologists of Madrid (no. 18299). He has successfully supervised 6 doctoral theses.
