Definition

Pediatric acute myeloid leukemias (pAMLs) without defined recurrent genetic abnormalities are categorized based on differentiation. These leukemias can be classified into 7 subtypes: AML with minimal differentiation, AML without maturation, AML with maturation, Acute myelomonocytic leukemia, Acute monoblastic and monocytic leukemia, Pure erythroid leukemia, and Acute megakaryoblastic leukemia (AMKL).1,2 It's important to note that this group of pAML does not include acute leukemia of ambiguous lineage, myeloid neoplasms with germline predisposition, AML with myelodysplasia-related changes, or therapy-related myeloid neoplasms. The classification is primarily based on morphological and immunophenotypic characteristics, however, genetic alterations still play a significant role in determining prognosis and guiding treatment decisions. 3-6
