Definition

Most ocular and orbital tumors of childhood are distinct from tumors that occur in adults. Many are benign and congenital with early presentations. 1 Numerous conjunctival tumors can occur in children. Choristomas are congenital lesions representing normal tissue(s) in an abnormal location.  So far, rarely melanocytic conjunctival tumors exhibited mutations like the one seen in skin nevi. Juvenile inflammatory melanocytic naevus may be confused with melanoma.
Children with neurofibromatosis type I (NF1) OMIM:162200 have a higher predisposition for uveal lesions e.g., e.g. choroidal nodules, ganglioneuromas and Lisch nodules, 2 and for optic pathway gliomas (OPGs).3
Retinoblastoma is the most important childhood tumor of the eye.  Retinocytoma is a rare benign retinal tumor.  Intraocular medulloepithelioma is most of the time sporadic, but also associated with DICER1 syndrome. 4 Pilocytic astrocytomas is the most frequent optic nerve glioma in children, characterized by KIAA1549::BRAF fusion.
