Classification

Definition

Sinonasal hamartomas are uncommon lesions of nasal and sinus cavities and are further classified into three entities: respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma (REAH) and seromucinous hamartoma (SH) seen in adult patients, and nasal chondromesenchymal hamartoma (NCMH), predominantly occurring in newborns and infants.  1 REAH and SH shared features suggesting that these lesions exist on a spectrum, rather than as distinct entities. 2The neoplastic versus reactive nature is a matter of debate since, consistent molecular findings were not demonstrated.  Frequent association with mutations in DICER1 has been seen in NCMH, and are reported in patients with DICER1-related tumor predisposition syndrome. 3
