Definition
Benign epidermal proliferations caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection of keratinocytes comprise verruca vulgaris, verruca plantaris/palmaris, and verruca plana. HPV1, HPV2, and HPV4 HPV1, HPV2, and HPV4 usually predominate in both verruca vulgaris and plantaris/palmaris, while HPV3, HPV5, HPV10 and HPV28 mainly in verruca plana. Malignant potential is absent in immunocompetent individuals, although atypical, extensive, or treatment-resistant lesions may occur with immunosuppression. 1-3
