Definition
Benign and pre-invasive mesothelial tumors include adenomatoid tumor, well-differentiated papillary mesothelial tumor, and mesothelioma in situ.
| Benign and preinvasive mesothelial tumors | Genetic marker(s) |
|---|---|
| Adenomatoid tumor of the pleura | Somatic missense mutations involving TRAF7 in >80% of cases. No mutations typical of mesothelioma such as BAP1, SETD2, NF2, PBRM1, and others.1 |
| Well-differentiated papillary mesothelial tumor of the pleura | Somatic missense mutations in TRAF7 or CDC42, which appear mutually exclusive of one another, have been reported in some cases. Mutations in EHD1, ATM, FBXO10, SH2D2A, CDH5, MAGED1, and TP73 have also been reported. No evidence of other typical mutations seen in mesothelioma such as BAP1, SETD2, NF2, PBRM1, and others.2,3 |
| Mesothelioma in situ | Some cases harbor somatic BAP1 mutations, otherwise no other alterations as detected by whole-exome sequencing. In addition to BAP1 alterations, loss of MTAP expression has been noted in rare cases.4,5 |
